When it comes to actor headshots especially for children and teens wardrobe is just as important as showing up. The right outfit helps showcase personality, enhance camera presence, and give casting directors a clear picture of your child’s range.
Below are some tips to help you prepare for your child’s headshot session with confidence and creativity.
Bring More Than You Need
Even if you’ve booked a session with two looks, we always recommend bringing double the amount you need, therefore you'd bring four looks. Having backups allows your photographer to select the pieces that work best on camera and complement your child’s skin tone, eye color, and background.
What Colors Work Best?
Solids, vibrant tones that enhance your child’s natural features. These include:
Primary & Secondary Colors: Blue, Yellow, Red, Orange, Green, Purple
Jewel Tones & Tertiary Colors: Emerald, Burnt Orange, Pinks, Deep Teal, etc.
These tones not only pop on camera but also reflect a wide emotional range that helps with typecasting.

Don’t Be Afraid of Patterns & Layers
Its highly encouraged to bring patterns and layering options. Here are some great choices:
Plaid and stripes – especially for a fun, youthful vibe
Jean jackets, leather jackets, or light outerwear
Open button-up shirts layered over t-shirts
Hoodies or flannels (for a relaxed or "best friend" look)
Just remember: when in doubt, bring it! Your photographer will help make the final decision on set.

What to Avoid
To keep the focus on your child’s face and expression, avoid clothing that may distract or clash with casting expectations:
Clothing with logos, characters, or heavy graphic designs
Sequins or sparkly fabrics (they reflect light inconsistently)
Large bows, headbands, hats, or statement accessories
Keep it clean, simple, and flexible.
Final Tip: Let Them Express Themselves
While there are guidelines, there’s also room for personality and fun. If your child feels confident and comfortable in what they're wearing, that energy will come through in their photos. Trust your photographer to guide the process and remember, we’re here to help you capture the best version of them.
