The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Your Wardrobe for Headshots

Updated: 6 days ago

Bring More Than You Booked

Even if your session includes just two looks, we strongly recommend bringing at least four wardrobe options. This gives us room to experiment with different colors, moods, and casting types. It also ensures we have a solid backup if something doesn’t translate well on camera.

What Colors Work Best for Headshots?

For adults, vibrant, clean tones that complement your skin tone and eye color are ideal. Here are some options:

  • Primary & Secondary Colors: Blue, Yellow, Red, Orange, Green, Purple

  • Jewel Tones & Tertiary Colors: Burnt Orange, Pinks, Deep Teal, Forest Green, Mustard

These colors help you stand out and give casting directors a clear, flattering visual of your look. Your choice will depend on your personal preference and the role you aim to portray. If you're going for a "Dark, Thriller, and Mysterious" role, dark colors like solid black would be more suitable than bright pink.

The Power of Layers & Texture

When it comes to wardrobe, layers are your best friend. They add visual interest and can convey subtle hints about character types. Try including items like:

  • Jean or leather jackets

  • Open button-ups layered over t-shirts or tanks

  • Sweaters, cardigans, and lightweight coats

For a relaxed, approachable tone, plaid and stripes work well, especially if you want to achieve a youthful or casual vibe.

What to Avoid in Your Headshot Wardrobe

To keep the focus on you and not your clothing, skip these distracting elements:

  • Graphic tees or shirts with logos

  • Sequins or sparkles

  • Hats, large jewelry, overly trendy accessories

The cleaner the look, the more timeless your headshots will be.

Outdoor Session Tips

If you're shooting outdoors, avoid solid white or light pink, as these colors tend to get washed out in natural lighting. Instead, choose deeper, more saturated tones that hold their presence on camera.
